This is the first time that the Horticulture Department, in collaboration with the Organic Agriculture Society, has organized a three-day organic mango and jackfruit fair from May 23 to 25 at the Dr. M.H. Marigowda Hall in Lalbagh, said Ramesh, Director of the Horticulture Department.
Addressing the media at the Director’s Office, Lalbagh today, he said that on May 23 at 3.00 pm, Secretary, Horticulture and Fisheries Department, Dr. Shamla Ikshal will inaugurate the fair. He said the exhibition and sale will be held on May 24 and 25 from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.
Karnataka was the first state to introduce an organic farming policy in 2004. Due to this, Karnataka is at the forefront of the entire country in promoting organic farming. Since then, more than one lakh organic farms have been established due to the encouragement given by the government and various non-governmental organizations to eco-friendly farming. He said that there are farmers.
For the last 3 years, the Horticulture Department has been promoting organic farming in 18 districts of the state under the Paramparagata Krishi Vikas Yojana. Each district has a cluster of organic farmers. He said that this project is being implemented in an area of about 10,000 hectares, covering a total of 11,630 farmers.
There are a total of more than 1.5 lakh farmers in the state and there are many organizations in the state to provide a market for the fruits, vegetables, pulses and value-added products like jaggery, oil etc. that they grow.
Among them, the Bio-Agricultural Society, started in 2005 with the encouragement of the government, is located in Lalbagh and promotes organic farming and markets agricultural products.
In addition, fairs are organized from time to time to create awareness about organic food among consumers in Bangalore and elsewhere and to provide a market for organic farmers.
For the first time, organic mango and jackfruit festival at Lalbagh
When summer sets in, the aroma of mango and jackfruit is captivating. Everyone is waiting to taste the king of fruits, mango, which is available in the market, is full of chemicals. They say that only those who know the taste of ‘organic mangoes’, which are grown naturally and ripened without the use of any chemicals, can taste them.
The jackfruit, which tastes like honey when you put it in your mouth, is a wonderful world, the Kalpa tree, which is edible from the young fruit to the seeds that have been peeled, diabetes caused by constant consumption of jackfruit, He said that jackfruit, which is rich in medicinal properties, can prevent cancer and constipation. Every household should eat and enjoy it. This fair has been organized to introduce organic mango and jackfruit cooking and value-added ingredients to consumers.
Special features of the fair: Organic mango and jackfruit growers from different parts of Karnataka will bring a variety of varieties for display and sale. The world’s most expensive mango variety “Miyazaki Mango” will be on display. If available, the increasingly rare Appe Midi, a mango variety from Tipu Sultan’s era, will be available for display and sale. Similarly, the importance and diversity of jackfruit is also being showcased at this festival.While the seedless jackfruit is on display, red, yellow and white jackfruit varieties will be available for eating, especially the red moon jackfruit. The fruits can also be taken home. He said that stalls selling jackfruit ice cream, chips, chocolate, papaya, halwa, kebab, holige, vade, dosa, palya, biryani will be available at the fair, and a jackfruit juicing machine will also be available.
The Horticultural Research Centre, Hirehalli, Tumkur will be showcasing various varieties of red jackfruit. They will provide information on jackfruit cultivation and value addition. Sahaja Samriddhi – Organic Farmers’ Association will be showcasing more than 75 varieties of jackfruit and mango.
On May 24 at 11.00 am, interested farmers will be trained on organic mango and jackfruit farming. Horticultural experts Dr. Ramakrishnappa and Dr. Hittalamani will provide necessary information. Agriculture expert Shivanapura Ramesh will guide them on how to set up a jackfruit garden.
He said that a mango and jackfruit painting competition for children was also organized at 11.00 am and a jackfruit lifting and jackfruit weight guessing competition for adults was also organized at 3.00 pm.
At the fair, 40 rural entrepreneurs, farmer companies, farmer and women’s groups from different parts of Karnataka will bring value-added products of jackfruit and mango, cereals, organic products and handicrafts for sale, and desi seeds for sowing for the monsoon season will also be available.
