The country’s premier policymaking body, NITI Aayog, in collaboration with the Government of Karnataka and the Bangalore Water Board, has organized a two-day national workshop on ‘Reuse of Treated Wastewater’. The two-day event will be held on November 6 and 7 and will be inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
This important workshop will be attended by top officials, water experts, and industry leaders from various states of the country, and discussions will be held to formulate a national plan to reuse purified water to the maximum extent.
Under the Brand Bangalore campaign led by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, emphasis has been placed on the efficient use of waste water. Through this, the Bangalore Water Board has become a model for the continent in terms of efficient use of waste water. Bangalore city is at the forefront among the cities that have adopted the Circular Water Economy. Bangalore city has a sewage treatment capacity of 90 percent and 1,348 MLD of water is being purified. By utilizing this water efficiently, lakes are being filled. In addition, along with the maintenance of parks and gardens, it is also being supplied to industries.
Due to the vision of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, several projects have been implemented to turn Bangalore’s wastewater into an asset. The success of our city has proven that purified water is not a waste, but a resource that strengthens the city’s sustainability.
It is a matter of pride for Karnataka to host the NITI Aayog workshop. This is a great opportunity to showcase our Bengaluru’s progress in wastewater treatment and share our experiences with the country. This is a good platform to showcase the projects undertaken in Bengaluru urban wastewater management under the Brand Bengaluru campaign led by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, said Dr. Ramprasat Manohar, Chairman, Bengaluru Water Board.
This approach will help large cities like Bangalore reduce pressure on freshwater sources like the Cauvery and support future growth, said Dr Ram Prasat Manohar, chairman of the Bangalore Water Board.

In a landmark achievement, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has become the first Indian water utility to be inducted as a member of the Smart Water Networks Forum (SWAN) – a globally renowned body dedicated to advancing digital and data-driven water management.
The membership places BWSSB alongside leading international utilities and technology innovators that are shaping the future of sustainable water management. By joining SWAN, BWSSB gains access to cutting-edge global best practices, research collaborations, and smart water technologies, reinforcing its commitment to digital transformation under the “Utility of the Future 2026” vision.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Ram Prasath Manohar, IAS, Chairman, BWSSB, said “This membership marks a new chapter for Bengaluru’s water story. It’s not just a recognition of our progress – it’s an opportunity to learn, collaborate, and lead India’s transition to smarter, more resilient water systems. Under the Brand Bengaluru initiative, our focus is on building global partnerships and adopting world-class service standards, which has been the vision and mission set by our Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar.
The announcement was made at IFAT India 2025, where key officials, experts, and stakeholders discussed Bengaluru’s roadmap towards integrated water management and digital utility transformation.
BWSSB has already taken pioneering steps in smart metering, real-time monitoring, wastewater reuse, and citizen engagement platforms – initiatives that align with SWAN’s mission to leverage data for a sustainable water future.
