The Right to Information (RTI) Act plays a crucial role in fostering transparency and accountability in governance, said Dr. B. R. Mamatha, Commissioner of the Karnataka Information Commission.
She was addressing a group of 65 students from St. Joseph’s Law College, Bengaluru, on May 10th 2025, who visited the Commission to gain firsthand insight into its functioning and the implementation of the RTI Act.
Dr. Mamatha explained that filing an RTI application empowers citizens to seek information from public authorities regarding the functioning of government departments, misuse of public funds, and irregularities in the implementation of schemes. “The RTI Act has been instrumental in exposing many cases of corruption and inefficiency,” she noted, adding that it serves as a powerful mechanism for citizens to hold the administration accountable.
She emphasized that the Karnataka Information Commission has been efficiently fulfilling their mandate to enforce the provisions of the RTI Act. “The Commission plays a key role in ensuring justice to citizens and instills them with confidence” she said. Applications received under the Act are duly examined and resolved through due process, she added.
The Commissioner also highlighted how the RTI Act has contributed to improving the quality of services by compelling transparency and enhancing official accountability.
During the visit, the students had the opportunity to observe the proceedings of the Commission and understand the process.
Interactive session:
An interactive session was also held with Chief Information Commissioner Ashit Mohan Prasad, during which students posed questions on various aspects of the RTI Act. Their queries were addressed and offered them valuable legal and practical perspectives.
