United Nations General Assembly President Philemon Yang of Cameroon has commended Karnataka for its gender equality initiatives through the implementation of five guarantee schemes implemented in the state, focusing on women as key beneficiaries.
During his visit to Bengaluru today, Dr. Shalini Rajneesh, Chief Secretary to the Government of Karnataka, welcomed him with a bouquet made from silk cocoons by women from a self-help group at the city’s private hotel Taj Westend. She presented him with a book on Karnataka, which depicts a world of many possibilities.
The UN President was interested in more information and details about Karnataka’s high ranking in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Chief Secretary gave details of the guarantee schemes like Grihalakshmi, which provides cash to women, Shakti, which provides free bus travel to women, measures taken to improve the participation rate of women in the labor force, provision of per capita food ration to prevent hunger and malnutrition, employment generation through skills, provision of cooking gas, and free electricity supply.
They expressed happiness that measures to encourage women to organize Self Help Groups (SHGs), value addition of agricultural and horticultural products, and promotion of holistic and organic farming for a toxic-free environment would help in preparing a comprehensive climate change action plan.
The UN President appreciated the concern of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for spearheading pro-women programmes to promote socio-economic and political equality in the state. He suggested that Karnataka’s success stories be shared in upcoming UN workshops so that other countries can also adopt these best practices.
State tops in renewable energy production:
The UN President expressed happiness that Karnataka has become the top state in the country in clean and renewable energy production, with 40% of total energy production coming from renewable sources.
The UN chief appreciated Karnataka’s progress in setting up global centres of excellence for information technology, software development, artificial intelligence (AI), research and innovation. He sought the state’s support as other countries need help to promote digital transformation. He also appreciated the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) dashboard created by Karnataka to monitor progress on sustainable development indicators at the state, district and gram panchayat levels.
G. Satyavati, Secretary, Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, and others were present on the occasion.
