The Belagavi Enforcement wing of Commercial Taxes Department, Karnataka has successfully unearthed the suppression of turnover and evasion of taxes by coaching institutes who are providing commercial coaching services. The probe revealed that the coaching institutes have not obtained the registration under the GST Act although they were statutorily required to get registered. The coaching institutes appear to have not properly understood the GST implication of their business transactions and the Department is in the pursuit of bringing all such institutes of this sector to the GST net.
The enforcement officers conducted simultaneous surprise searches in the business premises and residential premises belonging to a prominent group of coaching institutes providing NEET, JEE and other commercial coaching services in the District of Vijayapura. The officers have seized incriminating records, digital evidences and investigation is in progress.
As a result of search operation conducted, it is suspected that substantial volume of turnovers has been suppressed and tax thereon evaded by the said group of coaching institutes and they have deposited Rs 1 Crore GST voluntarily pending final quantification of Turnover and Tax.
