Bengaluru | June 12, 2019: FCA India, manufacturer of the award-winning Made-in-India Jeep® Compass, today opened bookings for the Jeep® Compass Trailhawk All-wheel Drive (AWD), the most capable compact 4×4 SUV in India. Customers can now book the Trailhawk at a fully refundable INR 50,000 at any of the 82 FCA all-brand showrooms across 70 Indian towns and cities.
The Trailhawk is the first Made-in-India Jeep to have earned the coveted Trail Rated badge, a global benchmark that is given to Jeep 4×4 SUVs which are developed to have much superior off-roading capabilities compared to regular 4×4 Jeep models.
Announcing bookings open, Kevin Flynn – President and Managing Director, FCA India said, “The Trailhawk is a product which is developed for customers looking for a hugely capable and exclusive SUV in the compact category. It is the first compact SUV to be offered with the 2.0-litre 173 PS, 350 Nm BS VI turbodiesel engine, nearly a year before the new emission norms come into effect and, it is the only compact SUV which comes with a 9-speed automatic transmission.”
All-new features
The Trailhawk is being offered with all-new equipment such as Engine Stop / Start, Cruise Control, UConnect with built-in Navigation, Hill Descent Control (HDC), Jeep Active Drive 4×4 Low and ‘Rock Mode’ in terrain selection, in addition to Auto, Snow, Mud and Sand.
The Engine Stop / Start function is intelligent and adapts to the driver’s acceleration habits as well as traffic conditions, and is tuned to enable a 6% better fuel efficiency in India’s varied traffic conditions. The Cruise Control with Speed Control adheres to the new safety regulations that will come into effect on July 1, 2019. The 8.4-inch UConnect infotainment system now has built-in Navigation. The Hill Descent Control is a feature that kicks in when the Trailhawk is on a steep decline, especially in off-road conditions and ensures the vehicle will brake on its own (without driver input) and keep the SUV well within 3 km/hr. The Jeep Active Drive 4×4 Low is additional ratio in the Trailhawk’s drivetrain which allows for added traction in off-road conditions when the vehicle has to drive out of deep depressions in the ground or crawl onto rocky surfaces.
Engine and transmission
While the Trailhawk is a hard core off-roader, FCA’s engineers have found the optimum tune for the engine and its new automatic gearbox for urban traffic conditions as well. The BS VI turbodiesel engine is much more silent than its BS IV version, and the 9-speed automatic is finely tuned to deliver a progressively torquey drive with seamless gear changes. The best performance can be achieved when the vehicle is driven in the 1750 – 2500 rpm band.
The 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine is re-engineered with additional technology to make it fully compliant with the BS VI norms which come into play on April 1, 2020. As the engine will be available in all Trailhawks nearly one year before the norms become effective, it uses urea technology that will ensure peace of mind for customers. This means that the BS VI engine is capable of running on BS IV diesel until BS VI diesel is widely available in the country. Until then, Trailhawk owners can drive to the remotest part of the country without worrying about the quality of diesel because the engine is designed to self-cleanse, without any external intervention.
Exteriors
On the exterior, the most noticeable elements are the anti-glare decal on the hood which ensures the sun does not hamper the driver’s visibility; the front bumpers are redesigned and are now devoid of the aerodynamic overhang (present in the regular Compass) in order to improve the approach and departure angles of the Trailhawk, helpful mostly in off-road conditions. A generous air dam has been provided at the bottom of the front bumper for enhanced air intake. The Trailhawk also comes with the comfortable Frequency Damped Suspension, albeit has Ground Clearance much higher than the regular Compass to aid extreme on- and off-road conditions. The Compass Trailhawk monograms on the front and rear are now matte, neutral grey and the 7-slots in the grille also gets matte, neutral grey frames. The Trailhawk is given a Ruby Red tow hook at the rear which makes it capable of pulling out a stuck vehicle 1.5x its gross weight.
Underbody steel ‘skid’ plates of 3 mm thickness protect the engine, transmission, urea tank and the fuel lines. The SUV’s water fording capability is now 840 mm, which means the Trailhawk can effortlessly wade through water logged locations in the monsoon, or through streams while off-roading, up to this height.
The Traihawk comes with 17-inch alloy wheels shod with all-new, all-terrain tyres with better side wall protection and extra grip for better traction off- and on-road.
Interiors
The overall interior theme is black with Red accents to match the exquisite aura of the Trailhawk, which also gets the large panoramic sunroof. The SUV gets black leather interiors and the piano black accents in the regular Compass have been replaced with matte, neutral grey touches. Upholstery and steering wheel get exclusive Red embroidered stitches that enhance the exclusivity for occupants. The centre display in the instrument cluster is now a much-larger, 7-inch screen which gives plenty of vehicle information at the press of a button, such as – navigational direction, temperature of engine, engine oil transmission oil, level of urea in tank and other information such mileage, radio frequency, gear select etc. The steering wheel now has Cruise Control settings on the right-hand side and a button on its left can enable voice activated control of radio, media, climate and navigation.
Safety
Trailhawk, just like the entire Jeep Compass range has over 50+ safety and security features. The Trailhawk in particular is offered with six airbags, including side full curtain airbags which protect rear seat passengers from head injuries. Roll Over Mitigation is an intelligent safety feature in the Trailhawk that senses the SUV tilting excessively on either side and intuitively activates the side airbags and protects all occupants in a roll-over situation.
