A merchant of American Express, Canada-based outerwear brand and small business Therma Kōta has built a global following supported by the backing of the community they call family. Originally conceptualized by Mosha and Sophie Lundström Halbert, the sisters turned to the expertise of their mother, notable designer Linda Lundström, to create a sustainability-focused brand of outerwear influenced by the family’s Nordic heritage and Canadian upbringing.
In celebration of Mother’s Day, the mother-daughter trio share their appreciation and learnings from running a small, female-founded family business:
When asked about the secret to running a successful family-owned business, Sophie said “Love, forgiveness, and focus. We keep each other aligned on our values, while having fun along the way. There’s no one you can trust or be as brutally honest with as your family, which has made our brand, designs and partnership stronger.”
The business is inspired by the family’s Scandinavian roots and the Lundströms bring together their unique perspectives to create new collections. “Everything we do is inspired by our Nordic roots – from our campaigns shot on location in Icelandic nature, to our styles, which are all named after strong Scandinavian women we admire including family and friends. Also, the hygge sensibility of coziness at home and our Viking tenacity of embracing the elements and getting outside, rain or shine,” shared Linda.
To-date, the best advice given by mom Linda has been a “waste not, want not,” approach in business and life, being mindful of the planet. We take unused material from larger items like coats to make smaller items like hand bags and mittens,” said Mosha.
