The media, often referred to as the Fourth Estate, plays a crucial role in shaping and strengthening society. If media raises an issue, we see its wonderful and far-reaching impact on society.’ This was said by famous author journalist Dr. Anubha Jain, who was speaking as the keynote speaker in a special lecture on the subject of journalism and its various dimensions under the Media Club Activity organized by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of the Bengaluru City University on Wednesday in Bengaluru.
While speaking, Dr. Anubha Jain mentioned the Nirbhaya case along with the recent Abhaya Kolkata rape case, apart from discussing many burning issues including Tehelka, Naina Sahni Tandoor case, Zahira Sheikh Tehelka case. She shared her career experiences with the students and made them aware of various aspects of journalism and answered the questions asked by the students.
Dr. Jain said that the media has evolved into a powerful tool for protecting democratic systems. It shields the public interest, raises awareness, bridges communication gaps globally, and actively fights against injustice and social offenses. Media and media personnel, who work as an important source of communication and media as a mirror of society, should introduce people to the truth and reality with a balanced and unbiased approach. People expect media to work ethically against corruption, bureaucracy, racism or caste bias, and gender inequality, she added.
She said that media is considered the fourth pillar of society. Today in the 21st century, electronic media or social media are popular, but still people consider print media news more reliable and it cannot be compared.
While talking to the students on various aspects of mass communication and journalism, she emphasized that in drafting a good report, a reporter should connect with the common man or reader, investigate to the depth of any news, and deliver unbiased news to the masses with the help of available sources.
Dr. Jain said that a journalist should make reliable news by keeping in mind many important dimensions. She said that one should choose this profession not just because of glamour and herd mentality but because of one’s own desire. Speaking on the occasion, she said that a journalist should always be ready to work under deadlines and work pressure.
It may be noted that as a senior journalist, Dr. Anubha has covered many important events like ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 moon mission, Aditya L-1 launch, the inauguration of HAL helicopter factory in Tumkuru by PM Modi, G-20 meetings, BRICS Women Parliamentarian Summit etc. Dr. Anubha Jain has also written a coffee table book titled ‘Women Leaders in Rajasthan Legislature – Since 1952’. She is an honorary member of the FICCI FLO Bengaluru Chapter and is also the honorary additional secretary of the Rajasthan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. She was the honorary director of International Services and Public Image at Rotary Bangalore.
On this occasion, Prof. Jyoti Venkatesh, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and HOD of Mass Communication and Journalism Department, Bengaluru City University; Senior journalist and Bengaluru City University media consultant S.R. Aradhya; faculty members of Bengaluru City University journalism and Mass Communication Department including Dr. Tejaswini Devakumar, Dr. Ashwini Ramesh, coordinators Dr. Praveen, Dr. Mariswamy etc. were present.
