BENGALURU INDIA 10 September 2018 :Bengaluru: Commemorating the 33rd National Eye Donation Fortnight at Narayana Nethralaya, over 100 students from 12 schools of Bengaluru participated in various activities and competitions like poster making and puppet show on Eye donation. Four children who had transplanted corneas also joined the activities.
Speaking on creating awareness amongst children, Chairman and Managing Director of Narayana Nethralaya, Dr. Bhujang Shetty said, “Kids truly inspire others to work for eye donation. Almost 3,000 children of a school are the primary mascots of our Doddaballabur eye collection centre. In case of death of someone they know, they personally encourage the deceased’s family to donate the eyes. By adopting a similar approach everyone should proactively start working for eye donation. We plan to raise maximum awareness through such activities and aim at reaching One Lakh corneal transplants by 2020.”
Appreciating the great work done by Narayana Nethralaya, the Principal of Delhi Public School -Bangalore North, Ms. Manju Balasubramaniam said, “DPS has always been associated with Narayana Nethralaya for creating awareness on eye disorders. During our upcoming school fest, we will reach out to the entire community of DPS and encourage all children and parents to pledge their eyes as well as work for eye donation.”
Delighted on having his sight restored through cornea transplant, 17-year-old Harish from Kabballi, Hassan, said “I had stopped going to school after my 10th standard since I had lost sight due to Keratoconus. Thanks to Narayana Nethralaya and a good person’s donated eyes, I can now see again, go to college, and happily paint. My family and I would also donate our eyes and encourage everyone to do the same.”
Deviprasad R of NPS Yeshwantpur, Amrutha BE of Sri Rama Vidyalaya, and Manasvi G Baragur of NPS Rajajinagar won the first, second and third prize respectively in the poster competition titled ‘Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud’. While Sri Vani School won the first prize in puppet show, everyone was moved by the show by Mathru Blind School. The event also saw performances by the staff of Narayana Nethralaya, teachers of DPS -Bangalore North and a brief address on eye donation by Gp. Capt. S K Mittal, CEO of Narayana Nethralaya.
