Jakkur Government Flying Training School (GFTS), the oldest flying training school in the country and the premier flying training school run by the state government, is being revived and restarted in the current academic year, said Deputy Chief Minister, Minister for Revenue, Youth Empowerment and Sports and Minister for Muzrai Department Dr. G. Parameshwara.
Speaking to the media after inspecting the Jakkur Government Flying Training School today, he said that the license of this Government Flying Training School (GFTS), which was started by the government in 1940 to fulfill the aviation dream of poor and middle class children, was cancelled in December 2023 due to various reasons. Now, the license has been granted by the Central Government’s DGCA from 16.07.2026 to 15.07.2031 (5 years), and the school has been renovated with necessary infrastructure.
One Chief Flight Instructor (CFI) and two Flight Instructors have been appointed in the said Government Flight Training School. There are a total of 5 aircraft here, out of which 3 aircraft (Cessna 172P, Cessna 172S, Tecnam P 2006T) are in full flying condition. He said that urgent steps will be taken to repair the remaining two aircraft.
PPL (Private Pilot), CPL (Commercial Pilot) and Multi Engine Endorsement training will continue as before. He said that there is a total training capacity of 30 students and the admission of new students will begin soon.
Several private companies providing aviation services in the country are planning to purchase thousands of new aircraft, experts have said that there will be a demand for more than 35,000 pilots in the future. It is not possible to pay crores of rupees to the poor and middle class in private aviation training schools to meet the demand. Realizing this, the government is planning to train lakhs of middle class children.
He said that the training will be conducted in complete safety as DGCA officials have conducted runway safety and flight tests and confirmed that they are satisfactory. He also said that the students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes will also be provided with scholarship facilities from the Social Welfare Department.
He said that no buildings exceeding 45 meters in height will be allowed within the 2.7 km area surrounding this school. An action plan has already been formulated with the aim of further expansion if the 10 acres of land adjacent to the school are taken into custody. It is planned to use the Mysore and Hassan airports for training, and there is no intention to close this institution.
