– Upholding Inner Integrity is Essential in Journalism

“The media is the fourth pillar of the Constitution—not to protect power, but to provoke thought. However, it must not become an instrument of provocation,” stated Supreme Court Judge Justice Aravind Kumar during the Justice K.R. Gopi Vallabha Iyengar Memorial Lecture held in the city. The lecture on “Freedom and Restrictions of Media – A Balance of Law” was organised by Vakilara Vahini (Lawyers’ Forum) at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
Addressing the gathering, Justice Kumar emphasized that while the media must celebrate freedom, it must also maintain responsibility and balance. “Freedom of expression is vital, but discernment is equally essential. Editors, anchors, and digital influencers must not misuse the power of media for incitement. Instead, the profession must uphold its moral purpose with an inner sense of discipline,” he remarked.
He described journalism as a pursuit of truth that should not cause harm to anyone. “The media must act in public interest, guided by responsibility and fairness. Investigative journalism should be encouraged—but not at the cost of delivering verdicts. Media freedom should not remain merely a matter of legal declaration, but a reflection of constitutional morality,” he noted.
“Journalists must self-regulate. Media, like sages, must persistently question in pursuit of truth, without infringing on individual liberties. Freedom of the press is a moral responsibility, not merely a legal entitlement,” he observed, further adding that “journalists and doctors are both social healers.”
Reflecting on the legacy of Justice K.R. Gopi Vallabha Iyengar, Justice Kumar recalled a conversation with legendary Mysore Chief Justice Nittur Srinivasa Rao. When asked who his most distinguished junior advocate was, Justice Rao had named Iyengar. “Justice Iyengar set high standards in ethics, advocacy, and discipline, serving as a model for fellow lawyers,” he noted.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Pratima Murthy, Director of NIMHANS and granddaughter of Justice K.R. Gopi Vallabha Iyengar, said, “He left behind a remarkable legacy in the judiciary. He used silence as a powerful tool, inspiring people to introspect and reform. I had the opportunity to engage with several eminent legal minds, thanks to his legacy.”
Senior Advocate and former Advocate General Uday Holla emphasized the irreplaceable role of the media in preserving democracy. “We can never forget the courageous role the media played during the Emergency to safeguard democratic values,” he said.
