Narayana Nethralaya’s ‘Prekshan’: A program that highlighted the importance of giving new life through vision donation
Bengaluru, September 5, 2026: Narayana Nethralaya (Rajajinagar) and its Dr. Rajkumar Eye Bank jointly organized the event ‘Prekshan 2026 – Drishti Deedi, Jiva Deedi’ as part of the 41st National Eye Donation Fortnight. The main objective of the event was to create awareness about eye donation and motivate more people to take the pledge to donate their eyes.
The celebrations began with a felicitation ceremony at the Dr. K. Bhujanga Shetty Auditorium at Narayana Nethralaya, Rajajinagar. The contribution of volunteers, eye collection centres and activists who are actively involved in the eye donation process was recognized and honored on this occasion. The ‘Dr. K. Bhujanga Shetty Award’, given for the best eye collection centre, was presented to ‘Terapanth Yuvak Parishad’, Bangalore. Similarly, the ‘Harish Nanjappa Award’ was presented to ‘Manipal Hospital’ in Malleswaram, Bangalore, for its outstanding efforts in eye donation awareness.
After the morning program, a ‘Blind Walk’ was held at the Orion Mall Amphitheater in Rajajinagar. Dr. Naren Shetty, Director, Narayana Nethralaya, flagged off the walk. More than 200 people, including doctors and staff of Narayana Nethralaya, children, and the general public who visited the mall, participated in it. The walk helped them experience the challenges of walking without eyes and instill a sense of compassion and inclusion towards the visually impaired.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Naren Shetty, Director, Narayana Nethralaya, said, “We have the power to change everyone’s life. We can give this new life through eye donation, which brings light to the lives of those in darkness. My father, Dr. K. Bhujanga Shetty, along with Dr. Rajkumar, started the eye donation campaign in India. Later, Dr. Rajkumar’s family ignited this awareness and inspired lakhs of people to take the pledge of eye donation. We need more awareness in this regard, I request the public to come forward and donate their eyes,” he said.
In the evening program, a musical concert by visually impaired artists from the ‘Sneha Jyothi Rasamanjari Kalatanda’ of Belgaum not only captivated the audience but also strongly conveyed the message of inclusion.
The main attraction of the evening was the eye-catching ‘Drone Show’. The show depicted the importance of vision and the benefits of eye donation through colorful visual poetry. The drone show demonstrated how donated eyes can bring light to someone’s life. Images of Dr. Rajkumar, Puneeth Rajkumar and Dr. Shivarajkumar, who are closely associated with this campaign, appeared in the sky.
Dr. Shivarajkumar, who arrived as the chief guest, said, “Our family has been closely associated with Narayana Nethralaya and its eye donation movement since the time of Appaji Dr. Rajkumar. He not only gave his name to the Eye Bank, but also donated eyes himself. Following in his footsteps, our entire family has donated eyes or pledged to do so.
