Bengaluru, 05 May, 2018: Unseeded player Fardeen Qumar and his sister Farhat Aleen Qamar of Jaipur, Rajasthan were crowned Champions of the Roland-Garros Amateur Series as the duo won the Final of Boys’ Singles and Girls’ Singles respectively here at the Bowring Institute on Saturday.
17-year-old Fardeen Qumar showed great zeal as he clawed his way through the initial rounds where he had beaten top seed Arjun Honappa in the second round and followed up this performance with gritty wins against Delhi’s Tushar Madan in the third round, 10th seed D Gahlot in the Quarterfinals and D Kumar of Tamil Nadu in Semifinals. In the Final match played in front of a boisterous spectators, Qumar beat Ayush Deswal in straight sets 6-0 6-2 to win an all-expense paid experiential trip to the Roland-Garros 2018 in Paris where he will get to watch top-class tennis.
His sister Farhat Aleen Qamar made the Bengaluru outing doubly sweet as she won the Final against 10th seed S Gaware of Maharashtra. Qamar was composed throughout her match as she overcame a 3-6 deficit to beat her opponent 6-4 6-4. 15-year-old Aleen was ecstatic after her win as this will be their first trip abroad. “I have to get my passport made now,” stated an elated Aleen after winning the Final. “We will be joined by my eldest brother who is 19. He will accompany us to Paris and our whole family is excited for us. Everyone in my family except my mother have played tennis and are huge tennis buffs and it’s like a dream come true to go witness the Roland-Garros 2018,” exclaimed Fardeen.
