Supreme Court rules on establishment of ‘mega agricultural market’ in Bengaluru: 272 acres of land acquisition process is regular
Bangalore, April 30 (Karnataka News):
The legal hurdles in the government’s plan to set up a large-scale ‘Mega Agricultural Market’ in Bengaluru for the benefit of farmers, traders and the general public have been cleared, said K.C. Doreswamy, Additional Director and Secretary, Bangalore Agricultural Produce Market Committee.
In a press release, the Supreme Court has given a historic verdict that the acquisition process of approximately 272.33 acres of land under various survey numbers in Srigandha Kaval and Herohalli villages adjacent to the Magadi main road in Bengaluru North taluk is regular.
The Bangalore Agricultural Produce Market Committee had proposed to acquire 172 acres 22 guntes of land in Srigandha Kaval village and 100 acres 11 guntes of land in Herohalli village for the establishment of a mega market. Jamnalal Bajaj Seva Trust had approached the court challenging this.
The state High Court had previously ruled that the land acquisition process had lapsed from 2014 to 2019. The appeals and review petitions filed by the committee were dismissed.
After the committee filed SLPs in the Supreme Court from 2022 to 2025, the case was referred to the High Court for a fresh hearing. In February 2025, a single-member bench of the High Court ruled that the land acquisition was in order.
Hearing the petition filed by the landowners challenging this verdict, a bench of Justices B.V. Nagaratna and Ujjwal Bhuyan of the Supreme Court upheld the High Court order and dismissed the petition on April 27, 2026.
With this verdict, a major hurdle in the construction of a mega market that would provide modern facilities to farmers, workers and consumers has been removed. This historic victory is an important milestone in the history of agricultural marketing in the state. APMC Secretary K.C. Doreswamy thanked Agriculture Marketing Minister Shivanand S. Patil, senior advocates Dr. Abhiṭīk Manu Singhvi, Shyam Diwan and the legal team for their role in this success.
