Bengaluru, 10 Sep 22
On behalf of Air Force Sports Control Board (AFSCB) and under the aegis of Services Sports Control Board (SSCB), the 71st Inter Services Athletics Championship 2022 was held at AF Station Jalahalli from 06 Sep 22 to 09 Sep 22. The Championship aimed to inculcate competitive spirit and sportsmanship among defence personnel and to select Services Athletics team to participate in 61st Senior Open National Athletics Championship.
The Championship was inaugurated by Air Marshal Manavendra Singh, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Training Command IAF on 06 Sep 22 at Station Synthetic Athletics Stadium of AFS Jalahalli. A total of four teams from Army Red, Army Green, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force participated in the championship.
Many athletes who represented the country in various international events in the past were among those who participated in the mega tri-services annual event. The prominent ones included Naib Subedar Irfan KT (London Olympics 2012 and Tokyo Olympics 2020 20 km Race Walking), Naib Subedar Santosh Kumar (Asian Games 2018 400m Hurdle), Chief Petty Officer Muhammed Anai Yahiya (Common Wealth Games 2022- 400m x relay) and Junior Warrant Officer Sachin Roby (World Championship 2017-400m).
Air Marshal Saju Balakrishnan, Senior Air Staff Officer, Training Command graced the occasion as Chief Guest during the closing ceremony held on 09 Sep 22. In his closing address, the Chief Guest appreciated the efforts put in by the Station administration in conducting the event in a befitting manner and congratulated the players for exhibiting true spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie. The Air Marshal awarded the Athletics Championship trophy to Army Red and presented medals to the winning players.
