IMIA Announces Integration of Karnataka State FIP into National Initiative for Sustainable Marine Fisheries
The Indian Marine Ingredients Association (IMIA) today announced an important step towards strengthening the sustainability and global competitiveness of India’s marine ingredients sector through the integration of the Karnataka State Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) into IMIA’s broader national initiative.
The announcement was made at a press conference held at The Pride Hotel, 93, Richmond Road, Langford Gardens, Bengaluru – 560025, Karnataka, in the presence of industry leaders, association representatives, and stakeholders from various states.
IMIA, the national representative body of the Indian marine ingredients industry, has been actively promoting the sustainable development of the fishmeal and fish oil (FMFO) sector through responsible sourcing, improved resource utilization, scientific management, and stakeholder collaboration.
The marine ingredients sector plays a vital role in the national economy while supporting the livelihoods of thousands of fishers and workers across the fisheries value chain. The industry utilizes low-value, short-lived, naturally abundant pelagic fish species, along with fish processing by-products, unavoidable bycatch, and post-harvest losses, thereby contributing to efficient resource use and the principles of the circular economy.
Recognizing the need for a unified national approach towards fisheries sustainability, IMIA has been advocating the concept of “One India – One Fishery Improvement Project (FIP)”. A harmonized national FIP framework will strengthen India’s credibility in international markets, improve access to sustainability-focused buyers, reduce duplication of efforts, and build a coordinated pathway for responsible fisheries management across the country.

Our vision is to create a unified and credible sustainability framework for India that supports fishers, strengthens industry collaboration, and enhances the country’s standing in global markets.”
The press meet was organized to announce the integration of the Karnataka State Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) into IMIA’s national initiative, with the objective of expanding the programme across both the west and east coasts of India.
On this occasion, Shri Uday Salian, representing M/s Yashaswi Fishmeal and Oil Company, formally handed over the Karnataka State FIP to Dr. Mohamed Dawood Sait, President, IMIA, in the presence of representatives from IMIA and industry stakeholders from various states. This marks an important step towards establishing a nationally coordinated Fishery Improvement Project for India’s marine fisheries.

Representatives from IMIA and industry stakeholders from different regions also expressed their support for a nationally coordinated Fishery Improvement Project and reiterated the need for collective action, stakeholder cooperation, and sustainable fisheries management practices to ensure the long-term future of India’s marine fisheries and marine ingredients industry.
