The world is witnessing rapid changes in the fields of digital revolution, artificial intelligence, cyber law, data protection and international justice. In this context, it is vital for law students to not only gain proficiency in traditional legal studies, but also to understand contemporary technological and global challenges,” said Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot, Governor of Karnataka.
He was delivering the presidential address at the 7th Convocation of Karnataka State Law University, Hubli, today.
The Governor emphasized that access to justice is the fundamental right of every citizen, and modern technology plays a crucial role in advancing this objective. “Initiatives such as e-courts, online legal aid and digital legal education are significant steps in making the justice system transparent, efficient and accessible. Law students must actively engage with these innovations to strengthen the justice delivery system,” he said.
Recalling Dr.BRAmbedkar’s vision, the Governor stated that Ambedkar viewed law as a powerful instrument for social transformation. “Dr. Ambedkar linked law with the core constitutional ideals of equality, liberty and fraternity. He believed that law must protect human rights and uphold social justice. A law becomes meaningful only when it gains moral acceptance in society,” he noted.
The Governor urged students to uphold sensitivity, responsibility and ethics in their professional journey. “Legal expertise is not limited to argument and interpretation. When you defend rights or present a case, your inner sense of justice will be your true guide. Society looks to legal professionals to uphold fairness, protect the weak and ensure that justice reaches all,” he advised.
Highlighting the value of timely justice, the Governor remarked, “Our ancient ideal ‘Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah’ forms the foundation of India’s judicial philosophy. While our judicial system is committed to justice for all, delayed justice poses a serious challenge. Ensuring speedy, accessible and affordable justice must be our collective effort to strengthen public faith in the judiciary.”
Praising the progress of Karnataka State Law University over the past decade and a half, he noted its contributions to academic excellence, research, social engagement and international collaboration. “The University’s partnerships with national and global institutions for research and capacity building, and its role in promoting peace and harmony through legal education, are commendable,” he said.
On this occasion, honorary degrees were conferred upon Hon’ble Governor of Andhra Pradesh Shri S. Abdul Nazeer and Senior Advocate Shri V. Sudheesh Pai. Extending his congratulations, the Governor urged them to continue serving the cause of justice and public welfare.
Congratulating the graduating students, he said, “You have chosen a noble and responsible field. The responsibility of upholding the ideals of justice, equality and the Constitution now rests with you. Whether in courts, administration or public service, uphold truth, fairness and moral integrity at all times.”
The ceremony was attended by Retired Supreme Court Justice Dr. Shivaraj V. Patil, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. C. Basavaraju, faculty members, students and dignitaries.
