Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban Milestone: 1.25 crore houses sanctioned, 1 crore houses delivered

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) has achieved another significant milestone with the sanction of over 1.25 crore houses under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0, of which more than 1 crore houses have been completed and delivered to beneficiaries across the country. Building on this milestone, the Government continues to accelerate the implementation of PMAY-U 2.0 to expand access to affordable housing for eligible urban families.

In line with this commitment, the 8^th meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) under PMAY-U 2.0 was held on 6^th August 2026 at Sankalp Bhawan in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Shri Satendra Singh, Secretary, Department of Urban Development, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) to review the scheme’s progress and approve additional housing proposals sent by States/UTs.

The meeting was also attended by  Kuldip Narayan, Joint Secretary & Mission Director (JS&MD), Housing for All (HFA), Shri Sanjeet, Joint Secretary & Financial Advisor (JS&FA), Shri RK Gautam, Deputy Director General (DDG), HFA and other senior officials from the Ministry, along with PMAY-U Mission Directors from participating States/UTs.

During the meeting, over 2.09 lakh houses were sanctioned under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban 2.0 for EWS families across the States/UTs of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Around 1.42 lakh houses have been sanctioned under Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC) vertical of the scheme, wherein financial assistance of up to ₹2.5 lakh is provided to beneficiaries to construct pucca houses on their own land. Meanwhile, 67,045 houses are for Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) vertical, under which affordable housing projects are developed by public/private agencies in partnership with States/UTs, with eligible EWS beneficiaries receiving Central Assistance for allotted houses.

With the latest approvals, the total number of houses sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0 has crossed 18.38 lakh, out of which 14.40 lakh are BLC houses and 2.48 lakh are AHP while 1.36 lakh houses are allotted to Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS) vertical beneficiaries and 13,046 are sanctioned as Affordable Rental Housing (ARH).

Secretary, MoHUA undertook a comprehensive review of the progress of the Scheme, assessing the pace of implementation across States/UTs, timely grounding and completion of sanctioned houses, geo-tagging, fund utilisation, beneficiary verification, occupancy status and overall progress under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0.

Secretary, MoHUA emphasised on need for expeditious implementation, timely release of funds, effective monitoring and close coordination among all stakeholders, including the beneficiaries to ensure that the benefits of the scheme reach every eligible urban family. He added that the committee will meet on a regular basis to review the progress of the Mission, facilitate timely approvals, address implementation challenges and maintain the momentum towards achieving the objective of providing affordable housing for all eligible urban families.

Beyond creating housing assets, PMAY-U 2.0 is fostering social inclusion, improved living conditions and enhanced economic security for lakhs of urban families. The Scheme also strengthens women’s financial security and places special emphasis on addressing the housing needs of vulnerable and marginalised sections, including eligible SC/ST/OBC communities, minorities, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, transgenders and other underprivileged groups, ensuring that the benefits of affordable housing are delivered in an inclusive and equitable manner to the last mile.

In the 8^th meeting of the CSMC, out of the 2.09 lakh houses sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0, 2.03 lakh houses have been allotted to women. Further, 16,662 houses have been allotted to senior citizens. While 21,954 houses have been sanctioned for SC beneficiaries, 14,252 are for ST beneficiaries, whereas 75,511 are for OBC beneficiaries.

Overall, among the sanctioned 1.25 crore houses sanctioned under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0, 1 crore houses have been allotted to women (in the name of female head of the household or in joint ownership). Guided by Hon’ble Prime Minister’s emphasis on Nari Shakti, the Scheme has prioritised women’s ownership of houses, promoting financial security, social empowerment and greater participation in household decision-making. This transformative approach has empowered crores of women with not just a house, but a valuable asset that strengthens families, enhances their sense of dignity and security.

Meanwhile, the continued pace of sanctions reflects the Government’s commitment to provide urban poor with safe, affordable and dignified pucca houses for a dignified living. PMAY-U 2.0 builds upon the strong foundation of PMAY-U, which was launched in June 2015 with the vision of Housing for All. PMAY-U 2.0 takes this vision forward by addressing the housing needs additional 1 crore eligible EWS/LIG/MIG families of urban India, having annual income of ₹9 lakh. The different verticals of PMAY-U 2.0 ensure that diverse housing needs are addressed, by supporting beneficiaries to construct their own homes, access affordable housing projects, avail interest subsidies on home loans or secure quality rental housing.
