State Home, Information and Biotechnology and e-Governance Minister Priyank Kharge called on the 24 prisoners who were released prematurely on bail to return to the mainstream of society and build a new life as responsible citizens.
Speaking after distributing certificates to 24 prisoners released on bail at Bangalore Central Jail, Parappana Agrahara, he said that punishment is not the end of a person’s life; it is an opportunity to reform. After returning to society, they should make meaningful amends for their mistakes by living as law-abiding citizens.
The state government is committed to making prisons not just places of punishment but also centers of personality transformation and rehabilitation. The prisoners are being provided with all the necessary opportunities for education, skill development, job training and mental fitness. This will facilitate them to lead a self-reliant life after their release, the minister said.
After the program, the Minister visited various departments of Parappana Agrahara Central Prison and inspected them. He interacted with the prisoners working in the computer department, got information about the training being provided to them, job skill development and the problems they are facing and gave necessary instructions to the officials.
Later, he visited the prison kitchen and inspected the quality and cleanliness of the food being prepared for the prisoners. He viewed various handicrafts made by the prisoners and appreciated their skills. He said that there is a need to formulate schemes that will help the prisoners to build a self-sufficient life even after their release by providing a good market for such products.
He also visited a learning center set up for the children of prisoners in prisons and had a cordial conversation with the children. He said that the government’s priority is that the education and future of children should not be hampered for any reason, and the government is committed to providing them with the necessary facilities.
Comprehensive programs will be formulated to further strengthen prisons technologically and employably. Information technology, digital skills, vocational training and employment-oriented activities will be further expanded to develop the necessary capabilities of prisoners to lead a dignified life after their release, the Minister said.
He called on all those released from prison to start a new chapter in their lives. They should regain the trust of society and give a good message to others through their lives.
