The role of stakeholders is very important in the effective implementation of the Senior Citizens Act and Regulations, said Justice Ashok B. Hinchigeri, Chairman of the State Law Commission.

The State Government has taken up the issue of implementation of the Senior Citizens’ Care, Protection and Care of Senior Citizens Act, 2007, challenges and recommendations. Revenue Sub-Divisional Officers, Deputy Directors of Women and Child Development Department, Police Department Officers, Disabled and Senior Citizens. He was speaking while inaugurating a workshop organized for the District Disabled and Senior Citizen Welfare Officers of the Empowerment Department and representatives of voluntary organizations.
Sub-divisional officers should listen to the problems of the elders and issue orders to provide them with appropriate justice. The orders should be implemented by the police, revenue and women and child development officers.
He also said that if changes to the law are needed, they should be discussed in detail and recommendations should be made.
Shashidhar Shetty, Member Secretary of the State Legal Services Authority, who arrived as the chief guest at the program, said that the authority will provide legal awareness and assistance to all senior citizens. He also said that free legal services will also be provided.
Presiding over the program, Rajendra Kumar Kataria, Principal Secretary, Revenue Department, said that senior citizens from the vulnerable category in the state are facing many problems.Their children are throwing them out of their homes, confiscating their property, and subjecting them to physical, mental and financial abuse. This law has been enacted for their protection and it should be implemented effectively, he said.
Dr. Rabindranath Shan Bhag delivered the lecture as the main resource person for the workshop.
The workshop was attended by Mrs. Roop R., Director, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities and Senior Citizens, and Mrs. Radha S. Murthy of Nightingale Medical Trust. Prem Kumar Raja, Joint Director of the Department of Empowerment of the Disabled and Senior Citizens S Nataraj were present.
