The Indian building sector that contributes about 39% of the country’s carbon emission is preparing for decarbonising and become net zero by 2050. This would go a long way in supporting the country to achieve Net Zero carbon by 2070. The GreenPro Summit 2023 organised by Green Business Centre of Confederation of Indian Industry deliberated on the way and means to achieve the Net Zero carbon.
Dr. Shanth Thimmaiah, Chairman, Karnataka Pollution control board during his inaugural address encouraged the product manufacturers to embrace Green. He suggested the companies to implement green measures, become a Green company, and make their products Green. He has also mentioned that the Karnataka Pollution Control will soon come out with incentives for Green companies making Green products.
More than thirty-five companies across the country received GreenPro Ecolabel for their products and materials. These products and materials contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of buildings and built environment. Dr. Thimmaiah encouraged the developers, builders, and architects to make use of Green products for construction of buildings in Karnataka.
Mr. T S Narayan, Global Head, Sustainability and New initiatives, Wipro Ltd suggested Indian industry to integrate environmentally responsible practices as part of their business. He has also emphasised the need for implementing the Green procurement – purchasing of Green products and materials instead of conventional products in the organisations.
‘Green products are costlier’ is a myth which need to be addressed. In fact, since green products consumes less resources during manufacturing, the cost is lower compared to conventional products said Mr ParasuRaman, Chairman, Green Products and Services council. He has also mentioned that more than 6600 GreenPro Ecolabelled products available for construction of buildings in the market. This is expected to double in numbers in next two years.
He has also highlighted that the recent notification from Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change on Green Credits has notified Ecolabel as one of the criteria for product manufacturers to gain Green credits. This is an excellent opportunity for product manufactures to make their products Green, gain the credits and increase their profitability.
